Using Voiceover to Read Text in a Picture

Voiceover is an accessibility feature within Apple products that use iOS systems 15 or later. These directions will address how to use voiceover for text within a photo. The objective of this lesson is to learn how to use voiceover to read text found within a picture saved on an iPhone or iPad.

Step by Step Directions

  1. From the photos app, select the desired photo

  2. To turn on Voiceover:

    • hold down the side button to turn on Siri

    • say, “turn on Voiceover.”

    • press the side button again to turn off Siri

  3. Voiceover will automatically highlight the photo library back button. Quickly swipe from left to right across the screen. Navigate through each button until you hear “Photo” or “Live Photo.” If the live photo function is turned on, you may hear this two times. Voiceover will automatically begin to read any detected text within the photo. It may take 2-3 seconds for it to begin reading.
