Time to Practice

The objective of this page is to develop confidence and independence using voiceover to access print.

  1. Click on each image below to access a printable PDF of the picture.

  2. Print the PDFs to use for practice.

  3. If you prefer, try out items within your home or work place.

  4. Try using a blindfold to simulate the experience your students will experience.

  5. If an Apple device is not available for practice, an audio recording is available to listen to under each picture.

  6. Use the Feedback link at the bottom to let us know how it went!

Consider the following:

  • Voiceover does not read all print. The layout matters. For example, on the pictures of the box below, it successfully read the front side, the directions, and the back. It did not read the nutrition information successfully. It also described the front of the box inaccurately, but included enough text to discern that the picture was of a box of macaroni and cheese.

  • This information could be used to identify the type of food in the box, and to read the cooking instructions.

  • Voiceover is not perfect. At times it skips words or spells words that should be read. Did you notice this? If the speaking rate is too fast or slow, it can be adjusted in settings. Choose Accessibility, Voiceover, and a sliding scale is available to adjust the speaking rate.

  • In certain situations use of this AT is very helpful. It does take practice. Exploring all AT options is beneficial when choosing the most appropriate recommendation for specific individuals.
